I need more storage systems!

I enjoyed watching the Australian TV series, Love my way, over the weekend.  There was a spectacular bit
when a trip was taken to IKEA by a late thirties couple with new baby.  Female character says “I have a 4 week old baby.  I’m so tired.. I’m so bloody tired… I know people are dying in friggin’ Palestine or whatever but I need storage systems.  Charlie, I know, that’s why we’re here. Everything will be OK if I have more storage systems!  And a front loading washing machine and more bench
space….

Well, I laughed. I laughed at the fatigue of the new parents. I laughed at them caught in the flow of one way IKEA traffic and I laughed at the notion that with more storage, life is somehow better. What do you think? Would your life be better with more storage? or with less storage? And what the hell is a “storage system”? I think storage and system are two different things aren’t they? Or do you always say “storage system” in the same breath? Tell me your innermost thoughts….

Peter Walsh on Oprah

Declutter guru Peter Walsh will be on Oprah this Friday the 27th June – Channel 10 at 1pm… just thought you’d like to know!

The Morning Show

Just giving you the heads up for some free tips on organising and time management. I’ve been asked to be a guest on Channel 7’s The Morning Show this Monday the 23rd June to talk about finding more time in your day. The show is from 9-11am with Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies, so I hope you can tune in!

Great Oprah episode on now!

Oprah story (airing NOW on channel 9) today speaks living within means; including not consuming as much as we do, ’skip dipping’ and living more frugally – despite having a good income. Great story!

UPDATE:  Sorry if by the time you tuned in the show had morphed into mom-works-as-stripper… (I think the theme of the show must have been “alternative lifestyles” or something like that…)

Peter Walsh on Oprah today

Peter Walsh features on Oprah today in Australia… just thought you’d like to know! Channel 10, 1pm.  Enjoy!

Hello from Reno / Peter Walsh

I’m in Reno, Nevada, at the National Association of Professional Organizers Conference.  Peter Walsh was the keynote speaker and I am happy to say I just managed to say hi and get my book signed from him.  Very funny guy, very DTE and delighted to see a former Aussie (he’s now a U.S. citizen) doing so well on the world stage.  Kudos Peter!

Wendy Harmer’s ‘Stuff’

Premiering tonight on ABC TV (Australia) at 8pm is comedian Wendy Harmer’s four part series, Stuff. It examines our relationship with our physical stuff – tonight, “our stuff”, then “my stuff” “their stuff” and “stuffed”. More info here Love the ABC! (Thanks to everyone who called and emailed me to let me know it was on. I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but I’ve known about the series since it went into development 18 months ago!)
UPDATE Just watched the first ep – great stuff (no pun intended). Favourite bits – seeing Dr Michael Kyrios again, he was the keynote speaker at our first AAPO conference in 2006, and the golden comment from the environmentalist who quipped “the earth has to pay” for our consumerism. But the absolute highlight, hands down, was the beautiful comments from the blokes in jail… who all gave examples like “picking up my daughter from school” really bringing home what matters. Anyone who’s familiar with my philosophies knows that I don’t object to stuff – and am not a minimalist. I simply believe that there are times that our relationship with stuff is the real issue. What do you think? Did you see the show?

L.A. Organizing Blog and Organizing on T.V

I am enjoying the postings of John Trosko of OrganizingLA. I particularly LOVE this post about how long it *really* takes to create organising TV programmes. Having worked as a presenter on Australian TV, I know first hand the long hours involved to create even just a few minutes of television. John’s post talks about Monica Ricci contributing between 85-100 hours per make-over/episode of Clean House – that’s all the meetings, sourcing products, client liasion, hands on work, on camera presenting etc. I can relate to that- it’s an accurate figure. Organising takes time! Working as a presenter, a 12 hour day (with minimal breaks) is standard. A long-ish day is 14 or 16 hours… but almost twenty years ago, when I worked as a production assistant on TV commericals, I once worked 22 hours straight on a big budget shoot. Never again!
